Why Empowertunity?
I joined Empowertunity because I saw an opportunity to use my talents to make a difference in various organizations, from private companies to nonprofits to educational institutions. I have worked in a variety of environments throughout my career, and if my experience has taught me anything, it has taught me that there is no shortage of institutions plagued by poor communication, weak leadership, and toxic workplace culture. Through my efforts, I aim to effect positive change and help organizations improve in each of these areas in order to bring out the best in their employees.

Dr. John DeFilippis is a seasoned educator and administrator with decades of experience in education. He began his career as a K-12 classroom teacher, but eventually transitioned to higher education after accepting an offer to oversee the graduate programs in education at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, NJ. During his tenure at Saint Peter’s, Dr. DeFilippis achieved great success in the areas of enrollment growth, program development, and national accreditation.

After completing his Ph.D. in educational leadership at Seton Hall University in 2007, Dr. DeFilippis accepted a new role as Director of Continuing Education at New Jersey City University. Dr. DeFilippis’ tenure at NJCU was marked by the creation of several new noncredit programs, expansion of off-campus offerings in K-12 school districts, and advances in technology integration. These included the first online continuing education courses in the history of the university, as well as a partnership with a delegation from Brazil to offer courses to their citizens via live telecast. Dr. DeFilippis’ greatest achievement at NJCU was the founding of the Professional Development Institute for Educators (PDIE). Through PDIE, the university offered several workshops and long-term, sustained professional development programs to school districts throughout New Jersey.

Following his tenure at NJCU, Dr. DeFilippis served as a central office administrator in various K-12 school districts as well as an adjunct professor at both New Jersey City University and Kean University. Since 2018, he has worked as a full-time faculty member in the College of Education at Kean University, where he supervises clinical interns, develops partnerships with K-12 school districts, and teaches courses in educational finance, curriculum evaluation, and clinical practice.
