Why Empowertunity?

I want to make connections and develop others as they move through the various stages of their paths. I want to help people to identify their goals and to make realistic steps to achieving them. My contribution to this team is to demonstrate compassion and love as we work together to make our various environments a safe and healthy place to live and work. I also want to inspire the people we work with to find grounding through daily practice of connectivity with the Universal Forces.

Formal Education:

Doctorate (PhD), Therapeutic Recreation/Recreational Therapy and Gerontology University of Minnesota

Masters (MA), Therapeutic Recreation New York University

Masters (MS), Clinical Investigation, New York School of Medicine

Bachelors (BS), Recreation, Montclair State University

Each and every day, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to have life. Those who came before me were not as fortunate, but through their blood, tears, sweat, and sacrifices, I am here to tell the story, and to do good works so that those who come after me can continue to impact the universe in a positive way.

Sharon E McKenzie is a recently retired tenured faculty from Kean University in the Recreation Administration and Recreational Therapy degree programs.  While at Kean University, she was the program coordinator for the Minor in Gerontology and Assessment Coordinator for the Recreational Therapy Program. She served as Chair on several committees including the KFT Social Justice Committee and the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

She currently serves as a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Reminiscence and Life Review, and Activities, Adaptation, and Aging Journal.

Dr. McKenzie has been a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist since 1993. She also holds certifications as a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care trainer, Certified Alzheimer’s Practitioners (CDP), Certified Montessori Care Professional, and a Master Certified Health Coach.

Dr. McKenzie gives back to her local community and place of birth by serving as a Liaison for Alzheimer’s Jamaica, the Source Farm (an intentional community) in St. Thomas, Jamaica, and the Yoruba/Lucumi community in New York City and New Jersey.

Dr. McKenzie is an active member of the Jamaican Organization of New Jersey since the fall of 2019. She was elected to Vice President in fall 2020 then President in fall 2021.

Sharon believes as humans we should live with love, understanding, kindness, empathy, and patience for ourselves and each other. With this said, whether we are in the work setting, in our homes, in community, in the street among strangers, we can be compassionate in our disposition and communication with others. If we walk in the world with this perspective, we may be able to remove the barriers that are often put up because of our perceptions and interpretation of others, which more times than not, are incorrect.
